The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India announced that the sales of its popular compact car Swift has crossed the 1 million (10 lakh) mark in India. Maruti had launched the petrol variant of the Swift hatchback in May 2005 and the diesel variant was launched in 2007. Swift is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country due to its high affordability, fuel efficiency and acceptable performance under local conditions.
Mayank Pareek, Chief Operating Officer of MSI, said "The Maruti Suzuki Swift has been well-received by our patrons. The car is best-known for its design, product quality and brand assurance.” According to Pareek, the A2 plus segment (to which swift belongs) is the largest segment of the Indian car market in terms of value. Pareek claimed, "“The A2 plus segment is a promising part of the total market, with sales of up to 30,000 units a month. The Swift, apart from being the pioneer of the premium hatchback segment, is also one of the largest contributors to its sales, at around 50%."
Maruti Suzuki Swift is also one of the earliest compact cars in India to introduce a diesel variant. Pareek says that the diesel variant of Swift has been a hit among the customers and the ratio of diesel Swift cars sold against the petrol cars is 60:40 on a cumulative basis. Pareek said that Swift has done extremely well despite of the car industry in the country facing one of its toughest times at the moment because of the rising fuel prices and increase in the price of components which results in lower demand.
Pareek said, "While the industry, up to October this year, has declined by around 4.7%, the Swift sales have gone up by a whopping 18%." He added that the demand for the car has not declined despite of the labour issues at the Swift's home plant which is situated at Manesar. He claimed that the company has a capacity to produce 20,000 units per month at Manesar which is sufficient to fulfil the demand. Maruti Suzuki India is also said to be working on a left-hand-drive configuration of the Swift hatchback. The details are not revealed yet but we'll keep you updated on this one.

The premium motorcycle market in India is growing rapidly. And the brand which is making the most of this growth, is Harley Davidson. Already having sold more than 2,000 motorcycles since Aug 2009. Not only they are the largest premium motorcycle maker, they are also the fastest growing currently.
But, soon there will be more competition. Triumph Motorcycles
have announced their India launch date on 28th Nov 2013. To be offered
in the same segment as that of Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Triumph
Motorcycles are expected to bring a slowdown in the growing Harley
Davidson sales in India. But, the American motorcycle maker already has a
growth plan, which will not only counter the launch of any new
competition, but will also push their sales in the country.
Harley Davidson is expected to reveal India made motorcycle at the
2013 EICMA in Milan next week. To be built at their plant in Manesar,
this new motorcycle will be built from raw material sourced from India. Autocar India
reveals that a 750 cc fuel injected V-Twin will power this new Harley.
The engine will deliver max power of about 53 bhp and will have a top
speed of around 150 kmph.
Transmission will be in the form of 1 down rest-up pattern, while the rear wheel will be driven in a typical Harley fashion via toothed belt. Already caught testing in India, this new low-cost Harley Davidson motorcycle will feature MRF tyres, 90/90 x 17 in the front and 140/60 x 17 at rear. Braking will be taken care by disc brakes on the front and rear.
Even though it will be a low-cost Harley, the motorcycle is not expected to feature any sort of downgrade compared to a Harley made in the US. The bike will feature a long wheelbase, keeping with the touring credentials for ride comfort. As you can see in the image above, the rider will be seated upward with footrest not in the front, but right below, like Royal Enfield Bullet. Front suspensions will be in the form of telescopic fork while the rear suspension will be standard.
Not much has been revealed on the price front, but considering that this bike will feature more localized content, the price is going to be aggressive, something the market has not yet seen or heard. More details from the EICMA floor on 5th Nov.

For Hyundai Motor India, 2013 seems to be an encouraging year. Despite
challenging times and intense competition, the company has achieved its
highest-ever market share in the domestic market, crossing 20.3% in
September. In an interview with R Ravichandran, Hyundai Motor India
senior vice-president (sales & marketing) Rakesh Srivastava said
that the the company will ramp up production of the Grand i10. He also
discussed the company's future growth map. Edited excerpts :
Given that the year has not been good for the automobile industry in general, how has been Hyundai's performance so far?
Currently, the Indian automobile industry is facing challenging times
due to the tough macro-economic conditions such as high fuel prices,
interest rates, inflation, sharp rupee depreciation and lower customer
sentiments. However, we are satisfied with our performance. Up to
September 2013, we have grown by 1.2% over the same nine-month period
last year, with total sales of 4,84,040 units, including exports of
2,01,886, compared with the sale of 4,78,902 units in the
January-September period last year. However, overall industry sales were
down over 5% in the January-September this year.
At a recent meeting, you said that Hyundai has achieved its
highest-ever market share this year in the domestic market. Explain this
in perspective.
Despite the economic slowdown, Hyundai has increased its passenger
car market share in India to 20.3% in January-September 2013, against
18.3% in the same period of 2012.
It was 19.1% in both 2010 and 2011 and 19.2% in 2012. Given the
encouraging response to Grand i10, followed with festive offerings and a
sign of improvement in economic sentiments, we at Hyundai hope to
register a 22% share this year. Interestingly, we have been the largest
exporter with a market share of 46% and we would continue to maintain
our leadership in exports.
Audi's New A8 - Now Available For Order

Audi Ireland has announced pricing and order information for its new flagship model, the A8, which will arrive in Ireland in January 2014. The latest flagship combines revisions to its weight-optimised, predominantly aluminium body with a raft of technological advances including an upgraded line-up of EU6-compliant engines.
Features :
The new A8 features optional headlights employing MatrixBeam Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology which sets new benchmarks. The high-beam function uses 25 individual LEDs per unit which can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation. When the on-board camera detects other vehicles ahead, the Audi MatrixBeam LED headlights mask the relevant sections of the high-beam by dimming or shutting off individual diodes. Very bright illumination is preserved in the remaining zones.
There is a choice of five petrol and TDI engines, the majority of which have been revised to improve performance and efficiency. Priced at €94,080 OTR, and due on Irish shores next January, the new 3.0TDI 260BHP is expected to constitute the majority of customer orders. The highly efficient 3.0 TDI clean diesel increases from 250BHP to 260BHP but emissions fall 14g to just 155g, which qualifies the engine for tax band C or annual road tax of just €390. Of interest to Irish buyers will be the 4.2TDI which has been upgraded to 385HP with 850NM of torque.
The dazzling continues inside with (optional) LED ambient lighting in three colour choices and a more comprehensive palette of seat trims, inlays and colour themes. The wraparound command centre houses an automatically retractable eight-inch colour screen with 3D graphics, and there's a new head-up display system that conveys information of the driver's choice and appears to float 2.5 metres in front of the windscreen.
Electric seats are standard up front and those
opting for the long-wheelbase models can order the individual rear
seating package, which replaces the bench with two individual,
electrically-operated and reclining 'couches' that will also give you a
massage if you push the right buttons.
Keep that chequebook open and Audi will treat
you to a fridge, fold-out tables, rear seat entertainment package and a
high-end Bang & Olufsen sound system.
The A8 also follows its rivals in offering a
suite of driver assistance systems that includes adaptive cruise control
with stop & go function, active lane assist and park assist with
360-degree display.
The barnstorming S8 tops out the range. Its 4.0 TFSI engine blasts it from 0 to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds, yet cylinder-on-demand technology also renders it capable of up to 28 mpg, corresponding to 225 grams CO2 per kilometre.

Celebrating the product 10 million vehicle mark on the C-Class, Mercedes-Benz India will introduce the C-Class Celebratory Edition. This version of the C-Class, will mean that all the new sedans will come with the Edition C badging.
Do not expect any mechanical changes on this C-Class, as this will still have the same engines on offer with the C200 CGI, C220 CDI and C250 CDI. The variants are also expected to remain the same. The C-Class Celebratory Edition will get some cosmetic upgrades like a new revised front grille and some changes inside as well. It could get a push start and stop button inside of the regular key insert and the wooden finish trim will change as well. Also do expect the alloys to be different on the C-Class and that is about it. The specifications are likely to remain the same, as the current C-Class has good enough bells and whistles and even the engine are good in performance. The C-Class had received a major upgrade in 2011, when it got the new front grille, new headlamps and a redesigned instrument panel. The panorama sunroof also made its entry with this new C-Class.
New 2014 BMW Z4 Roadster - To Launch On November 14 In India

BMW India will launch the new 2014 BMW Z4 Roadster on 14th next month. The 2014 BMW Z4 Roadster will be the third launch by BMW India this year (the first two being of the 1-Series in September this year).
Internationally, the 2014 BMW Z4 is available with as many as three engine options- a 4 pot 2.0 liters and two 6 cylinder 3.0 liters. BMW India is likely to offer the Z4 in the sDrive35i variant with the 6 cylinder 3.0 litre unit in the 306 PS state of tune. The engine will come mated to a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission. This is the same gearbox that is available on the M5. The sDrive35i variant is rated at 17 mpg in city and 24 mpg on highway.
The 2014 BMW Z4 will come with a host of standard features and equipments such as leatherette upholstery, dual zone automatic climate control, an AM/FM/CD stereo system with HD Radio and AUX and USB inputs, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, rain-sensing wipers, heated mirrors, power-adjustable seats, bi-xenon headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels. The BMW Z4 2014 will be a direct rival to the Porsche Boxter, Audi TT and Mercedes SLK.
PRICE :
In all probability, the new 2014 Z4 will be priced higher than the current model. We expect the car to have a starting price of INR 70 lakhs.
The 2014 Jaguar XJR comes with a seriously powerful engine and a very competent transmission, leading to excellent performance and passable fuel economy. The LCD instrument cluster incorporates brilliant context-sensitive features, and the Meridian audio system is superb.
Two things in particular delighted me about the XJR. First, the eight-speed gearbox completely trashes the slushbox reputation of automatic transmissions. When driving with intent, braking and accelerating hard, a glance at the tachometer showed that this transmission was holding the revs up around 5,500rpm in the turns. The Sport program on this transmission was near-telepathic, finding the right gears before I knew I wanted them.
Second, Jaguar incorporates some extremely useful tricks into its LCD instrument display. The virtual gauges on this display look a little flat, but what I like is how Jaguar dynamically highlights the numbers around the ends of the speedometer and tachometer needles. I found it really easy to pick out the car's velocity and the engine speed on the gauges with a quick glance.
There is also a voice command system, but it only covers the basics. Sure, I could place a phone call by saying the name of a contact stored in my phone, but I couldn't do more with the stereo other than choose an audio source. Entering addresses for navigation required tediously saying each part -- city, street, and number -- after a prompt.
The navigation system's maps also look a little crude and washed-out compared with what you might expect from a luxury brand, although they do show in plan and perspective views. Jaguar integrates traffic information, which route guidance can use to detour around traffic jams. But this system doesn't show the expanded traffic coverage over more surface streets I've seen in other cars.
Mahindra has announced that it has so far sold around 6.5 lakh units of the Bolero SUV in India. The vehicle has been around for 13 years.
Mahindra claims that the Bolero is India’s No.1 SUV for seven years in a row and also the 5th highest selling passenger vehicle during April-September 2013. Numbers claim that the Bolero sold 1,17,665 units in FY-2013, as against 1,00,686 units during FY-2012, registering a growth of 17% and becoming the only Indian SUV to sell over 100,000 vehicles for two years in a row.
“Having sold over 6.5 lakh units since inception and ruling the roads for 13 years, the Bolero has transformed the SUV space in the country. Over the years, the Bolero has been updated and evolved with the changing lifestyle and aspirations of its customers resulting in its growing popularity. Ruling roads and hearts across the country, the Bolero has moved from strength to strength, to enhance the lifestyle, fun and adventure quotient of consumers,” said Pravin Shah, chief executive – automotive division, M & M.
BMW will launch the electric i3 in India next year. The car which is powered by a 125kw motor run by lithium-ion batteries has a range of about 150km on a single charge. The i3 is also the first car to roll out under BMW's new sub-brand BMW i. BMW i has been created specifically for vehicles that will use electricity for propulsion in some form or the other.
The i8, a sports car that will use both an internal combustion engine and electric motors to power the car, will be next in line. The i8 too will come to India at a later stage. Both the i3 and the i8 will come to India as completely built units.
The i3, which measures less than 4m in length, uses carbon fibre reinforced polymer or CFRP for the body shell that sits on an all aluminium rolling chassis. The car weighs less than 1200kg and has a top speed of 150kmph.

The new City would also have the option of a diesel powered car, the first from Honda Motors, which is currently riding on the success of its Amaze compact sedan, which also offers a diesel option. With over 35,000 Amaze having been sold since April, Honda is aiming for leadership in the mid-size sedan segment.
According to a source, the new City comes close on the heels of Honda's renewed strategy to gain volumes. Honda has bucked the general trend with sales growing 69% to 59,617 units in April-September period. The new City would be available in six to eight variants of 1.5 petrol & diesel engines and would also have automatic transmission option.
The City is based on the Jazz hatchback platform and will have more design lines flowing on the exterior to make it more fluidic styled and appealing for the C-segment customers.
It would have bigger wrap around clear lens headlamps with projector lights to give a clean look with a totally reworked integrated LED tail-lights on the rear. According to the same source, the City, which has been the mainstay for Honda Cars in India, would now be bigger in size and positioned above the current model to provide differentiation for the sub 4-metre Amaze compact sedan and also take up the vacuum of Civic that was phased out earlier this year.
Honda Cars India did not share any information on the launch date. Replying to an email questionnaire sent to the company, a spokesperson said, "We are not in a position to respond to your queries at this time." An analyst tracking the sedan segment says, the 2014 Honda City sedan could be a force to reckon with.
"The innovation and design theme that Honda generally puts in their products is phenomenal. Particularly, City, which has ruled in its segment for more than a decade," says Amit Kaushik, principal analyst (auto)—IHS Automotive.
Yamaha is planning to introduce a new uni-sex scooter to take on Honda's Activa and would be showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo.
After making a successful entry in the scooter market with the Ray and Ray-Z, Yamaha Motor India is planning to expand its scooter portfolio by launching a new uni-sex scooter in the up-coming year. The Ray was the company’s first scooter offering for the Indian market and was targeted at female consumers while the Ray-Z which was introduced earlier this year is a more male centric model. With this new offering Yamaha plans to tap a larger consumer base and the new scooter would be directly pitched against the segment leader Honda Activa. Yamaha hasn’t announced any details on the scooter but we feel that it would be showcased at the up-coming 2014 Auto Expo in New Delhi.
This move doesn’t come as a surprise from Yamaha since both the scooters have played a key role in improving the sales figure of the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer as sales grew by 42% in April-September period. Currently Yamaha has managed to grab only 5% of the total scooter market, which though sounds less is a commendable effort given the fact that it only entered the scooter spectrum only a year back.
From the recent sales figure in the two-wheeler industry it is evident that scooters are the future for two-wheeler manufacturers to improve sales given the current flattish market scenario. Such has been the demand of scooters that reportedly Honda’s Activa registered sales of 1.42 lakh units thereby overtaking the Splendor as the highest selling two-wheeler in the month of September. Yamaha also wants to cash in on the scooter boom and if they are able to pitch a well rounded product against the Activa, it would be helpful in increasing their sales figure and revenue even though they wouldn’t be able to surpass it so soon.
If rumours are to be believed, the country's largest car exporter, Hyundai is planning to introduce an automatic variant of its Grand i10. According to reports, many company officials have confirmed the same and the upcoming variant could soon feature in the Indian auto market. The starting price for Grand i10 Diesel Automatic is expected to be around Rs. 7.5 lakh, which shall make it among the most affordable hatchbacks in the country. The automatic version of Grand i10 shall be equipped with a 4-speed transmission system.
As seen in other diesel models, Hyundai
has managed to bring in automatic variants soon enough after the launch
of manual one, with the example being of Verna Diesel. The automatic
version of Verna comes equipped with 4-speed transmission system.
Reports are suggesting that the same gearbox of Verna will make it on
the Automatic Diesel version of Grand i10. However, the configuration of
the diesel version of Grand i10 would remain unchanged as the car gets
1.1-litre U2 3-cylinder diesel unit that churns out 69 bhp of power and
peak torque of 152 Nm. It is expected that the South Korea based car
maker will launch the diesel automatic gearbox in the top two trims of
the hatchback. However, the company has not released any information
regarding the same but it is expected that the variant would may way in
India any time soon.
After the launch
of diesel automatic, Hyundai would be offering its Grand i10 in petrol
automatic variant but till now an expected launch date could not be
ascertained. According to industry experts, Grand i10 Petrol Auto might
be launched at the upcoming 2014 Indian Auto Expo in February next year.
Grand i10 Automatic Diesel could arrive in Indian car market by late
November to early December time period. Industry experts are claiming
that due to the lack of automatic options in hatchbacks, Hyundai might
reap huge benefits once Grand i10 gets automatic transmission. As
believed, the newly launched car of Hyundai might create a market for
itself as it would be priced around Rs. 7.5 lakh.
It
has been almost two months since Grand i10 was introduced in India with
both petrol and diesel engine options. Although Hyundai offered all the
engine options in India, it refrained from giving the automatic gearbox
at that time. Now with the launch of Grand i10 Diesel Automatic, the
company might rake in more buyers as the car has been performing well in
the Indian car market. Talking about the fuel efficiency of Grand i10
Diesel Automatic, it is assumed to be around 22 kmpl as the diesel
variant is giving away 24 kmpl as claimed by Hyundai. Also to mention,
with this fuel economy figures, the Grand i10 Diesel Automatic would
become the best fuel economical diesel car of the country.

The Volkswagen Jetta facelift will go on
sale for a starting price of INR 13.48 lakhs. Prices for the Jetta
diesel variant will start at INR 14.78 lakhs. (Scroll Down for complete price list).
Worth
mentioning is that it has been over two years since the introduction of
the sixth gen VW Jetta in India. While the car has been registering
decent sales figures, the advent of the new 2013 Skoda Octavia has
worsen things a bit for its VW sibling.
Hence, it doesn’t come across as surprising to see Volkswagen readying a Jetta facelift for our market.
The
Volkswagen Jetta facelift is likely to boast of an updated set of
headlights, which would be similar to the one on the bigger Passat. Akin
to the headlights on the Passat, those on the Jetta facelift would
feature L-shaped Daytime Running LEDs (DRLs) clusters. The Trendline and
Comfortline trim levels will also get a set of new design ‘Sedona’
alloy wheels.
Other than these minor cosmetic changes, the car get additional features such as-
1.)Auto Climate Control (standard across all the variants)
2.)Headlight washer (for Highline)
Engine
options will remain untouched. This means that the car will be offered
with a 1.4 litre petrol motor and a 2.0 litre oil burner. The petrol
engine on offer is the same motor that is also available on the base
variants of the newly launched Octy. For the Jetta though, this engine
has a lower max power output of 122 PS and a lower peak torque of 200 Nm
. The Jetta 1.4 petrol boasts of an ARAI certified Fuel Economy of
14.69 kmpl.
The Jetta’s 2.0 litre oil
burner has a max power of 140 PS and peak torque of 320 Nm. The gearbox
options for this motor include a 6 speed DSG automatic and a 6-speed
manual gearbox.
We feel that it would
be nothing short of interesting to see if these updates would enable
the Jetta to fend off the fast rising heat from the new Octy.
Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta facelift.
